What professional teeth whitening is
Whitening uses a peroxide gel to lift stain out of the enamel and the dentine beneath it. It does not strip anything off the tooth and it does not weaken it. Done properly, with trays made to your own mouth, it is one of the safest things in dentistry.
The short answer. A course of professional whitening in Antalya is £200. It lightens natural tooth only - crowns, veneers and fillings stay exactly the shade they were made. If you are having any of those, whiten first.
The reason it is worth doing under supervision is the gum. A tray that fits badly puts gel where it does not belong, and that is what causes the burning people describe from shop-bought kits.
What whitening can and cannot lift
It works on the ordinary accumulated staining of tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco and time. Most people move several shades.
It does not work on porcelain or composite - a crown at £170 is fired at the shade it is made and stays there. It struggles with grey tetracycline banding, and it will do nothing for a single dark root-treated tooth, which needs internal bleaching at £120 instead.
If your enamel is thin and the yellow you can see is the dentine underneath, whitening has little to lift. That is a case for veneers, and it is better to hear it before you pay for a course.

Before & After Photos

Does whitening hurt, and is it safe?
The common side effect is short bursts of cold sensitivity during the course and for a day or two after. It is temporary and it does not mean damage. A desensitising paste for the fortnight beforehand takes most of it away.
What genuinely causes trouble is gel on the gums, which is a fit problem, and untreated decay, which lets peroxide reach the nerve. Both are found at the check-up beforehand. Anyone selling you whitening without looking in your mouth first is skipping the only part that makes it safe.
Whitening vs bonding vs veneers
Whitening at £200 a course changes colour and nothing else. It is the cheapest, least invasive option and it removes nothing from the tooth.
Veneers at £210 a tooth change colour and shape, and are the answer when the problem is not really stain. Composite bonding at £140 sits between the two.
The sequence matters more than the choice: whiten first, then match anything permanent to the result. Do it the other way round and you are stuck with the old shade in porcelain.
How long does teeth whitening last?
One to three years for most people, and the range is almost entirely diet. Heavy tea, coffee, red wine or tobacco pulls it back within a year; without those it holds for a good deal longer.
It is not a one-off purchase you have to repeat in full. Keep your trays, and a single top-up night once or twice a year holds the shade for very little.
Keeping teeth white afterwards
The first 48 hours matter most: the enamel is porous and takes up colour readily, so keep off coffee, red wine, curry and anything else that would stain a white shirt.
After that it is ordinary maintenance - a straw for iced coffee, water after red wine, and a hygiene visit at £60 a course, which lifts surface stain and is what most people mistake for the whitening wearing off.
Teeth whitening in Turkey: your questions answered
Still not sure? A clinician talks it through before you commit to anything.
Ask a clinicianHow much is teeth whitening in Antalya?
£200 for a full professional course. Internal bleaching of a single dark root-treated tooth is £120 a tooth.
Does whitening damage enamel?
No. Supervised peroxide whitening lifts stain from within the enamel without removing it. The damage stories come from ill-fitting trays putting gel on gums, and from whitening over untreated decay.
Will it whiten my crowns and veneers?
No. Porcelain and composite hold the shade they were made. Whiten first, then match any new work to the result.
How many shades will I go?
Several for most people with ordinary staining. Nobody can promise a number in advance, and a clinic that does is guessing.
Why not just buy a kit online?
Because the tray is the whole thing. A generic tray leaks gel onto the gum, which is what burns. Kits sold to consumers in the UK are also capped at a peroxide concentration that does very little.
Can I combine whitening with other treatment?
Yes, and it usually should come first in the sequence - before crowns or veneers are shade-matched. It fits easily into a trip built around other work.
Is it safe if I have sensitive teeth?
Usually, with a desensitising paste beforehand and a gentler concentration. Tell the dentist at the check-up rather than pushing through it.
How long do results last?
One to three years depending on diet, and a top-up night with your own trays restores it rather than starting again.
Can I whiten while pregnant or breastfeeding?
It is normally deferred. There is no evidence of harm, but there is no good evidence of safety either, and it can wait.
