For most UK patients, Antalya is the better bet than Izmir for dental work, and the reason is not that Izmir's dentists are worse. It is flights, the English-language support around the clinic, and how easily a two-visit treatment fits into a life in the UK. As a reference point, a zirconia crown with us in Antalya is £170 against a typical UK private fee of £850, fixed in writing before you book.
We should say the obvious part first. We arrange treatment in Antalya, with one partner clinic, so we have an interest. We do not send anyone to Izmir and cannot quote you Izmir prices. What follows is the comparison as we see it, including where Izmir has the edge.
Both cities answer to the same regulator
There is no "better regulated" city in Turkey. Every dental clinic, in Antalya, Izmir or anywhere else, is licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health under the same rules. The licence is for the premises, and each dentist also needs their own registration to practise.
That means the question is never which city is safer. It is which clinic is. A licensed clinic in Izmir with a careful dentist beats an unlicensed back room in Antalya every time, and the reverse is just as true. Our guide on how to choose a dental clinic in Antalya lists the checks, and they apply word for word in Izmir.
Where the two cities really differ
Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city and a working port on the Aegean. It has a large local population, universities with dental faculties, and plenty of dentists whose patients are mostly Turkish. That is not a bad thing. A clinic that lives on local word of mouth has to be good at ordinary dentistry.
Antalya is built around visitors. Its dental market grew up serving patients who fly in, so clinics there are more used to the things a UK patient needs: written quotes in English, treatment compressed into a week, and someone to answer a message when you are home and a crown feels high.
| Antalya | Izmir | |
|---|---|---|
| Coast | Mediterranean | Aegean |
| Direct flights from the UK | Wide choice, including many regional airports | Fewer routes, mostly from London |
| Winter flights | Reduced but still running | Thinner, more likely to mean a change |
| Clinics set up for foreign patients | Many | Fewer, with more local patients |
| English-speaking coordination | Common | Varies widely by clinic |
| Regulator | Ministry of Health | Ministry of Health |
| Zirconia crown, our clinic | £170 | We do not work in Izmir |
| Zirconia crown, UK private | £850 | £850 |
Flights decide more than people expect
Both cities are roughly four hours from the UK. The difference is how many airports fly there and how often. Antalya is one of the busiest holiday airports in Europe, with direct routes from London and many UK regional airports. Izmir has direct services too, but fewer of them, concentrated on the London airports.
This matters because dental treatment abroad is rarely one trip. Crowns and veneers usually mean one stay of around a week. Implants mean two trips months apart, with the second timed around healing rather than around your diary. If you live near Manchester, Birmingham or Bristol, a direct flight on the date you need is far easier to find to Antalya. Our guide to flying to Antalya for dental treatment covers airports, transfers and the gaps between appointments.
Out of season the gap widens. Antalya's flights thin in winter but keep running. A connecting flight through Istanbul is fine for a holiday. It is less fine the day after an extraction, with a swollen jaw and two airports to get through.
Price: what we can and cannot tell you
We will not put a figure on Izmir dental prices. We do not have a clinic there and anything we printed would be a guess. Prices across Turkey are set clinic by clinic, not city by city, and the spread inside one city is wider than the gap between cities.
What we can say is what changes the price in any Turkish clinic: the implant brand, whether the crown is milled in an on-site lab or sent out, how many visits are included, and whether the quote covers the scan, the temporaries and the hotel. A low quote that leaves those out is not cheaper. Our full list of Antalya prices is on the prices page, and every item there is the price you pay.
The aftercare problem, which is the same in both cities
This is the part most comparisons skip. The hard bit of treatment abroad is not the week in the chair. It is month four, when a crown chips or an implant feels tender and you are in Leeds.
Ask any clinic, in either city, what happens then. Who do you message, how fast do they answer, and is there anyone in the UK who will look at it? If the answer is "fly back", price the flight into the quote now. We offer a five-year guarantee on crowns and aftercare in the UK because a guarantee you have to cross Europe to use is worth less than it sounds.
Who might reasonably choose Izmir
Izmir is a sound choice for some people, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
If you have family in Izmir, speak Turkish, or already know a dentist there through someone you trust, the case for Izmir is strong. You will have local help, you may well pay local rates, and follow-up is easier when you visit anyway. The same goes if you live near a London airport with a direct Izmir route and only need simple work done in one trip.
Who is better served by Antalya
If you are travelling from outside London, need implants or a full arch over two trips, want a written fixed price in English before you fly, or want someone in the UK to see you afterwards, Antalya fits more easily. That is not a judgement on Izmir's dentists. It is a judgement on logistics, and logistics are where treatment abroad tends to go wrong.
You can read about our partner clinic in Antalya: Ministry of Health licensed, with its own lab on site. Before you book anything, you meet a clinician on video, and the price is fixed in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Is Izmir cheaper than Antalya for dental treatment?
Sometimes, at clinics that mainly treat local patients. But prices vary more between clinics than between cities, and a cheaper quote often covers less. Compare what is included line by line, not the headline figure.
Are dental clinics in Izmir regulated the same way as Antalya?
Yes. Every Turkish dental clinic is licensed by the Ministry of Health under the same national rules. Check the licence and the dentist's registration whichever city you choose.
Can I fly direct from the UK to Izmir?
Yes, mainly from London airports, with fewer regional and winter options than Antalya. From elsewhere in the UK you may need to connect, often through Istanbul.
Is Antalya or Izmir better for dental implants?
The quality depends on the surgeon and the implant system, not the city. Implants need two trips several months apart, so the city with easier direct flights from your nearest airport usually makes the plan simpler.
What if something goes wrong after I get home?
That depends entirely on the clinic or agency, not the city. Ask before you pay who handles problems once you are back in the UK, and get the answer in writing.
Is Antalya too touristy for serious dental work?
No. Being used to foreign patients means more clinics with English-speaking staff and treatment planned around a short stay. The checks on licensing, materials and aftercare matter far more than how many hotels the city has.
